Mithali Raj is a former Indian cricketer highly regarded as one of the best female players in the history of the sport.

She became famous for her great hitting skills and ability to lead others after being born on December 3, 1982, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

In her first game, a One Day International (ODI) against Ireland in 1999, she scored a perfect hundred. It was a stunning start to her career.

Over the years, Mithali scored the most runs in women’s international cricket. She also led India to two ICC ODI World Cup finals and managed the team in many other forms.

Mithali Raj, now aged 43, was born on December 3, 1982, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. She grew up in a Tamil family with her father, Dorai Raj, who served in the Indian Air Force, and her mother, Leela Raj.  Mithali also has an elder brother (Mithun) who played a major part in her early exposure to sports.

Raised in Hyderabad, Telangana, Mithali initially trained as a Bharatnatyam dancer before switching to cricket at the age of ten. She attended Keyes High School for Girls and later Kasturba Gandhi Junior College for Women in Secunderabad.  Mithali‘s cricketing journey began under coach Sampath Kumar‘s direction at St. John’s Coaching Foundation.

Career

Mithali Raj‘s cricketing career started with her ODI debut on June 26, 1999, against Ireland, where she made an unbeaten 114 runs. Her Test start followed on January 14, 2002, against England.

Over two decades, Mithali achieved numerous achievements, including becoming the top run-scorer in women’s international cricket with over 10,000 runs across formats.

She captained India from 2005 to 2022 and took the team to two World Cup games (2005 and 2017).  Mithali retired from T20Is in September 2019 and from all forms on June 8, 2022.

In a message to BCCI, she claimed humiliation and discrimination by Powar and Edulji.

Powar responded by criticizing Mithali‘s approach towards team relations and accusing her of valuing personal achievements over team goals. The strained relationship between Mithali and T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur also gained media notice during this time but was later settled following Powar‘s reappointment as head coach.
